Yachting within SURNU is a regular event, and because of our close proximity to the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) in Gosport, we are able to hire yachts of varying size free of charge due to being an RN unit.
Because SURNU has qualified skippers from Day Skippers up to Yachtmasters, we are able to hire yachts for weekends. Usually these weekends involve exercises in and around the Solent, however next year SURNU is planning on entering the annual Cowes Small Yacht Race, where the likes of Dame Ellen MacArthur participate.
An average weekend's yachting with SURNU will involve pilotage out of Portsmouth and seamanship exercises around the solent to begin, the usual 'bumps and grinds' to get inexperienced crew members comfortable with the yacht, and also getting everyone to have a go at helming, all of which is carried out whilst under the instruction of a qualified skipper.
Being in the URNU also means you are eligible to join the Royal Navy Sailing Association, with the option of life membership even after your time with SURNU is complete.
As well as these normal yachting weekends, SURNU also participate in a number of international expeditions, which would cost hundreds in the civilian world.
There are a huge variety of expeditions that SURNU cn get involved in, for example, members can choose to complete a leg of a transatlantic trip, or they can choose to sail to the canary Islands and the Caribbean on a Challenge 67 Yacht.
